Taking a Break

FullSizeRender

I just wanted to post a quick update here and say that I’ll be taking a break from gtylermills | Thinking Out Loud for the next few weeks.

As ScrapMills Signs & More has launched I have spent all my spare time there. We have just started and want to keep our momentum rolling. For the little time I’m able to spend on blogs I’ve had to update projects there and coordinate our social media accounts.

We’ve also been busy stocking supplies and filing orders. Each piece we make requires a few hours of labor then a few more doing the hand-painted artwork. We like paying attention to the smallest details on everything we make. It can sometimes run us tight on time but it’s something important to us and we hope it shows.

Thank you for all the support you’ve given and we look forward to seeing how our new venture can take us.

Verses in Manhood: Frost

Verses in Manhood

If Jack Bauer wrote poetry, it would be here | Verses in Manhood

I drew this little path on paper and added the words later. I never look at a squiggly without thinking of this poem.

It’s kind of cliche to say this is my favorite poem, but I don’t care. It really is. It’s amazing how just a few simple lines can be received by so many different people and still be found relevent. Everyone in the world has, at one point or another, been faced with indecision. We take our paths in life and live with where they take us.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Launching Scrap Mills Signs & More

Scrap Mills Logo

I’m excited to announce that my wife and I have launched a side gig called Scrap Mills Signs & More. We specialize in custom, hand-painted signs and some other small household items.

Scrap Mills Sign

I started making little things around the house out of necessity when my wife wanted something out of a catalog or Pinterest. I’d just say, “Oh I can make that.” It was really just an attempt to appease her but soon she came to collect.

After the first few projects I realized it was something I really enjoyed. And she approved.

With her support and encouragement we decided to share some of the things we’ve done so far with others.

I’ve been amazed at the great readers I’ve received from my site. Half of the support from anyone here would be more than I could ask for.

Please visit our site and share it with others. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Thank you for all your support! It doesn’t go unnoticed!

Working on Something . . .

Saw cord

I took this picture after I accidentally cut right threw the cord on my saw. It took some patience but I was able to wire it back together. It still works like new today. I love this picture because what had the potential to totally stop my in my tracks turned into something that looked amazing. It was a quick moment and a good lesson to learn. The reason the continue working is because that’s your quickest route to success.

I haven’t been posting much recently but I have a good reason, not just because I’ve been lazy.

I’ve been working on something pretty big and will ready to announce it this Saturday.

Wednesday’s Words: Martel

This is a series where I’ll post a few of my favorite lines from books.

YannMartel

[Today might not be 3.14, but 3/4 is pretty close.]

I was given this book as a gift from my wife. I had already seeing the movie but I wondered how it be to read it. I’m steadily making my way through it and came across this line I thought I’d share.

That’s the good thing about books. Even if you’ve seen the movie, you haven’t seen the it all. It’s the difference in seeing a house from the curb and walking inside. Sure it looks nice and you can probably get a good idea of what it has to offer, but unless you walk inside you really can’t say you’ve been there.
